Inspector General Issues Statement on City’s New Department of Human Resources Commissioner

Inspector General Joe Ferguson released the following statement on Deputy Inspector General Soo Choi being named the Commissioner for the City’s Department of Human Resources by Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel: “Today, Mayor-elect Emanuel announced Deputy Inspector General Soo Choi as his nominee to be the next Commissioner of the City’s Department of Human Resources. Ms. Choi has served this office and the public well in leading the formation of the OIG’s Hiring Oversight section, and we all wish her well in her new role. Ms. Choi will bring to her new position direct knowledge of the legal, structural, and operational problems in the City’s employment system. We therefore expect her to hit the ground running and will immediately hold her to the very high standard her expertise and background warrants. However, to turn the page on the sorry chapter of patronage in City employment, Ms. Choi will require the full institutional and public support of the incoming Mayor, something not afforded the most recent occupant of this important position. This office will continue to provide stringent oversight of the City’s hiring processes to ensure the City complies with the Shakman Decrees.”
